ENIGMA Codes (Control List #19 - 10/03) Finally updated this file, which was labeled 2002 but which had some (not all) of 2003's updates. ENIGMA's updates, current to May, 2004, and my notes come after the list. ============================================================= ENIGMA CONTROL LIST (making sense of the numbers scene) Copyright ENIGMA/ENIGMA 2000 1998 - 2003 Issue 19 Oct 2003 INTRODUCTION The ENIGMA CONTROL LIST is copyright, we place no restrictions on its republication / review by interested, hobby related, parties other than the document must be reproduced in full, unedited. This list supersedes all previous Control Lists. It is continually updated, taking into account all known, and confirmed, information at the times of revision. Stations if marked "DELETED" have been identified as other stations already included on the list. Existing stations never change position within the context of the list and deleted ENIGMA ID's are NOT reused. Many of the stations listed are no longer operational, although some have been known to return after long periods of inactivity, however the Control List serves as an important historical record of "numbers" activity and is the first, and only, (non-governmental ?) organised classification of Number Stations, both voice and Morse, publicly available. NUMBERING RATIONALE Voice stations are classified strictly according to the language used in their transmission. Eg : Station NNN in German, French, English & Hungarian would have four distinct reference numbers. To eliminate confusion over unknown or obscure/ambiguous languages and dialects the total number of languages has been grouped into four:- E - English, G - German, S - Slavic, V - All other languages (As a group the Slavic languages are easy to identify, but to the untrained ear are not easy to identify specifically. Slavic words for numbers are closely linguistically related ) Non-voice stations have the classifications:- M - Morse & RTTY X - Other modes Suffixes refer to variant forms of the SAME STATION, occasionally or regularly operating within the same period as the more usual format. Earlier formats, later superceded, of the same station, but operative over different periods are classed as separate stations. The term variant for our purposes applies only to format, not to schedule, or different voice, or musical ID's. The variants have many forms, some being minor and others radically different in preamble or message type. * Denotes station/format no longer active ^ Denotes station/format possibly inactive Omitted reference numbers have been deleted from the Control List CW Figures/Letters shown in Morse Station info are for illustration only, actual currently used may vary considerably, but have been used in past. KNOWN FAMILIES Direct equivalents (Morse & Voice) are separated by /. Other TX's operated by the same agency, but not direct equivalents, are separated by //. All equivalents use identical formats, and often similar schedules and frequencies Family "Owner?" For example, here are the numbers in Serbo-Croatian: 0 - Nula 1 - edna 2 - dvoytze 3 - tri 4 - chetryi 5 - pedartze 6 - sest 7 - sednitzer 8 - asem 9 - devet XB, the Buzzer, is a channel marker for S28. 4XZ, Israel: One of the transmission formats on this station has been identified as weather observations in a standard international code which looks like encrypted traffic, but decodes readily with the right process. Other transmissions are markers and encrypted traffic, probably for Israeli military. The station is thought to be a Navy headquarters in Haifa. E10/E10a: Also Israel, probably one of several possible intelligence agencies. Abnormal messages, or hours-long transmissions, usually indicate that something's about to happen in the Middle East. Not a real indicator, though, since something happens every day in the Middle East anyway. MX, the Morse letter stations: These are the single-letter channel markers that continuously repeat one letter in slow Morse code. They are Russian, probably the Navy. They are also known as SLBs (Single-Letter Beacons) and SLHFMs (Single-Letter HF Markers). They come in two types, clustered and solitary. Clustered are most likely for direction finding. They come and go,transmitting apparently on request from the fleet. Solitary are channel markers, and sometimes voice or data will be heard on the frequencies. ENIGMA used to have a whole subgroup of the MX designator for these They are: MX Solitary markers MXC Clusters MXF FSK Mode MXL Solitary long-term MXP "P" with message MXS Solitary short-term MXV Irregular V XM, the Whale Sound/ Backward Music stations: This may be the most confusing oddity on HF. The Backward Music Station was apparently the result of US military circuit noise being heard overseas and given a designator by ENIGMA. However, it is still circuit noise. It sounds like a rising audio tone, abruptly cut short -- like the backward guitar notes in old psychedelic music. Sometimes it's RF feedback, sometimes it's self-oscillation in ringy audio filters. A special case of "BMS" is the Whale Sound Station. This spooky noise appears on US Navy or Coast Guard frequencies. When tuned 1.5 kHz off by USB receivers, it makes a low, unsettling moaning not unlike humpback whale songs. When tuned spot-on, it sounds more like what it is, again circuit noise. A noisy, overcompressed landline goes idle, the noise slowly pumps up, eventually hits hard limiting, while audio resonances in the phone line conditioners go haywire (these conditioners often have way too much Q), and Radio Free Willy sings again! Note that when the frequency is used by voice or ANDVT (a 39-tone radio modem used for digital voice), Willy stops, sometimes for quite a while. XSL, the Slot Machine: XSL has been definitively traced to Japan as of 2003. Not only does it DF to there, but ground truth from visitors with radios indicate some low power stations not heard much of anywhere else. I finally got to name one of these stations. When someone told me about a strange noise that had been coming "from Asia" for about a year, it kept making me nervous until I finally recognized its very weird idling sequence (?) as the noise made by a certain type of gambling slot machine while it spins around and you wait anxiously to see if you'll finally win this time. This station appears on at least 13 frequencies. Some are heard worldwide, some are local. Some broadcast 24/7, others don't. Many of the frequencies are paired, possibly for diversity reception. Propagation differs enough on the pairs to show different locations or antenna patterns. The best guess is some kind of encrypted FAX or other data, probably from the Navy. The slot machine noise is most likely a crypto idler, which hunts for a call before syncing up and transmitting the brief hissing noises which would then be the actual content of the transmission. This is a very state of the art setup, with time sync approaching the limits of what can be done with atomic or GPS time on HF. This makes it even more odd that the audio seems overmodulated and distorted, adding harmonics that make the sound even more strange. # # #
