Editor, the Nation:

Susan J. Douglas is covering an old battle. The Pacifica lawsuits have been settled. There is a lot of complaining from the old guard, but I see no organized opposition to the new board.

There is much squabbling among the winners over just how to restructure Pacifica, but this is an aspect of the story not even touched on by Ms Douglas.

The real future of Pacifica is being determined by a court-ordered revision of the bylaws that is going on now.

These bylaws are being written by a committee of the national board and five subcommittees, one in each listening area, that are seeking the widest possible participation of listeners and staff. By Aug. 29, the new bylaws are to be in place, and the LAB elections held by Dec. 29.

Exactly how the elections will be run and who will be able to vote is the process that will determine the future of Pacifica -- not the outcome of an idiological battle.

Literally anyone who cares about the result is welcome to take part in the process. Even Pacifica affiliates will be asked for input.

That's the current story of Pacifica, and by rehashing an old one you are missing it.

Cliff Barney
